Layla Walter

Layla Walter is a New Zealand glass artist who has gained significant national and international recognition for her distinctive works in cast glass.

Walter graduated with a BA in Applied Arts in 1998, working initially as an assistant to leading glass artists including Ann Robinson before developing her own very highly-regarded practice.

In a rare achievement, her glass has been selected on five separate occasions for the Corning Museum of Glass - New Glass Review, a specially selected annual list of only 100 artists whose works are at the leading edge of current and relevant glass practice today.

Walter continues a tradition of cast glass, working with techniques which are highly skilled and complex, often using very personal representations of weaving or native flora and fauna carved in bas-relief.

Walter has been invited to teach, demonstrate and talk about glass casting in Australia, the USA, Canada, Germany, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and New Zealand.

Her work is held in numerous public and private collections including Auckland Museum; the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign affairs and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
