Stephen Bradbourne and Lyndsay Patterson

04 - 18 March 2014

Stephen Bradbourne's works are based on Pacific themes. A recurring shape in his glass mosaics stems from visual memories of tapa cloth patterns, including the frangipane flower. The green and black colours are based on memories of a loved shirt from the early 90s, which was made of fabric in these colours. The patterns on the large works in this show are influenced by the leafy gardens around his Auckland home and reflect his interest in things botanical. These pieces were made in Wanganui during a project in which Stephen was supported by Creative New Zealand to use Chronicle Glass studios. All pieces are hot and cold worked glass, using the murrine roll-up technique."

Lyndsay Patterson' s  Token Sets "continue my interest in family history, NZ history in relation to its geography, object/mark making and collecting, first visited in my earlier Tokens series. It is a conversation referring to my family's long history in the Pacific. My Grandparents house in Levuka was full of collected artifacts and objects from Fiji and the Pacific. Many of these objects have long since lost their story or provenance. It is in this regard that the Tokens are presented here as collections or sets. Although they have an intentional ambiguity about them, these objects are finely carved and have the look and feel that firmly places them in the Pacific. They carry a new story, that of a shared colonial history. Text used has been sourced from historical family letters or from NZ newspapers from the 1800’s."
