As a maker I am constantly negotiating the boundaries between order and disorder in the construction and decoration of vessel forms. Drawing upon my interests in geometric pattern and minimalist painting, I use different surface treatments to explore the subtleties of surface and texture created through the application of terra sigilatta and ceramic oxides. I am interested in how each vessel creates its own rhythm or pulse as the pattern wraps around its form. These patterns, like geological strata, speak of New Zealand’s natural environment- alluding to elements of land, air and water. Oscillating between positive and negative space, the patterns create junctions where it meets itself, sometimes adding a further layer of optical complexity.
