Katherine Smyth

Katherine Smyth’s work is influenced by her early involvement with the ceramics of the Middle East.  She first visited Jordan in 1993, where she worked with English ceramist Jim Mason teaching pottery to young local women.  There began her love affair with Middle Bronze Age pottery, the timeless beauty of which is reflected in her own work.  She has been back several times to the Middle East, once as a chef for an archaeological dig.

Katherine’s work also reflects something of her interest in food.  Her show “Fruit” was shown around the country, and the exquisite juglets representing figs, dates, lemons and other fruit were immensely popular.  Her next body of work continued the food theme in the “Squash” series of vases.

Katherine's most recent work concentrates on simple vase and jug forms with a creamy white or plain coloured surface closely patterned with contrasting  spots and stripes of glaze.

Katherine lives and works in Wellington
