Gulielma has been exhibiting her pottery at AVID for several years, and has developed a following of connoisseurs who appreciate her quiet and lovely style of domestic wares. Her teapots, cups and bowls reflect her lifelong engagement with lustrous glazes, shown to perfection on these hand thrown, mainly porcelain pieces. Her skill and expertise are apparent in every piece.
In her own words, Gulielma describes her career as a potter:
"I am English with an Italian first name (meaning William). I grew up in London with plenty of space for making things. My mother was an artist and my father an eye surgeon.
Alan Caiger Smith's reduced pigment lustres were the first pottery I saw when visiting his pottery on an outing from my boarding school.
I potted for years in evening classes after work. When in 1980 my NZ husband and I came to live in Wellington, I went to more classes, mainly with Wellington potters and eventually set up my own workplace. "
Gulielma has recently retired from potting, and AVID is honoured to have the last few pieces of her work that will be available in the marketplace. We are sad that there is to be no more of this beautiful work, but we wish Gulie a very happy retirement.
