Auckland artists Emily Siddell and Layla Walter met in 1997 at a glass conference in Sydney. They studied at Unitec Institute of Technology and have travelled widely together both learning new skills and sharing family holidays.
Familiar speaks of family past and present, friendship, and our process of repetitive making: crochet, slip cast ceramic, assemblage, and glass casting. We have shared our learning and applied the new skills to our own work in different ways, but drawing on our familiar experiences. Emily's fine metal crochet bags are adorned with ceramic feathers familiar from her father’s angel paintings; Layla's glass vessels are detailed with camellias and black fig from her garden.
"Seasons pass, birds fly and return to the same garden, children grow up, and we keep making".
