Joanna Campbell has been making her unique form of jewellery since graduating from Unitec in Auckland with a Bachelor of 3D design in 2001.  She works with precious metals often using the Japanese traditional technique of Mokume Gane.

Underpinning Campbell’s work is a fascination with textiles and an enthusiasm for making metal more fabric-like in all its iterations: the study of the drape of a grosgrain ribbon; the ability of anodised aluminium to absorb dye like silk; or making strings of sequins out of gold and silver.

Campbell has an extensive collection of rare and exquisite antique lace from all over the world – some pieces  over 100 years old – which she incorporates directly in her jewellery or uses to emboss the surface of the metal.

Campbell has tutored in jewellery making at Whitireia Polytechnic in Wellington and Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland and her work has been exhibited in London, Melbourne and throughout New Zealand.

Her work is held in public collections including the Dowse Art Museum, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
